A city tour is planned to visit famous sightseeing spots in Tokyo on the afternoon of Thursday Oct 11, 2007. This tour is included in the registration fee.
<Imperial Palace>
The Imperial Palace is the residence of Japan's Emperor and Empress. The Palace was originally Edo Castle, the seat of the ruling “Tokugawa” Shogunate. When the Shogunate was overthrown, the Emperor was relocated from Kyoto to Tokyo. Every day, many people visit the Imperial Palace to enjoy the quiet atmosphere and to view the historic buildings and beautiful green landscape.
<Asakusa>
The charms of Asakusa have remained unchanged since the Edo period, when it functioned as the city's gastronomic, artistic, and sensual playground. The traditional focus is Sensoji Temple, which may be reached by walking the length of a colorful street of festive stalls called Nakamise. Also known as Asakusa Kannon, Sensoji is one of the oldest and most impressive temples in Tokyo. The main hall was originally built in 645 to house a tiny golden statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, which had been caught by two brothers while fishing in the Sumida River. The temple grounds swarm with people buying fortunes, praying, sightseeing, and shopping.
<Akihabara>
Akihabara is renowned worldwide as a treasure trove of consumer electronics. Hundreds of shops, ranging from megastores to suppliers of tiny parts, line the streets beneath flashy neon signs. Originally a black market district where radios were sold, Akihabara has evolved into a giant mirror of the nation's prosperity and burgeoning technology. Japanese manufacturers send prototypes of new products to Akihabara to test consumer response. Larger shops are recommended for overseas shoppers. Prices may be negotiable, but only to a certain extent. Most shops are open from 10:00-19:00. Please enjoy your shopping!
